Spotting Fake Coins

If you are a coin collector and getting into collecting some serious coins you will want to know a real coin from a fake.  There are a few steps to spotting counterfeit coins. To perform all of these tests you should use a magnifying glass which will help you be sure of your decisions on whether it is fake or not.

The very first tip off that a coin is fake is that is just does not look right.  If you see a coin that seems fishy you should definitely continue to the next steps to see if it is a forgery.  The next, very easy step is the weight of the coin.  All coins have a specific weight.  If the coin does not match up to the known weight of that type of coin or very, very, very close then it is fake. If it is a silver coin, does it have that silver look to it?  It should have that white shine to it that is easily recognizable when you put a silver coin right next to a clad coin.  Next, the edge of the coin should match what is known about the coin.  If it should have reeds on the edge does it?  Or at least the remaining reeds if it is a well worn coin?  You should also make sure it does not look like there is a seem on the edge like two sides of different coins were fused together. Silver coins also have a distinctive ring when tapped with another coin.  You should hear this ring on a coin you know is silver and compare it to one you suspect is a fake.

If you follow these steps you should be able to protect yourself from being taken advantage of by counterfeiters.  Happy coin collecting!
